Traffic Rules and Violations

For everyone’s safety, drivers and pedestrians must follow traffic rules while on campus. Drivers are subject to Texas traffic laws that apply to public roadways, as well as San Jacinto College regulations. Review the driving rules and violations below.

 

Accidents and Crash Reports

If you witness or are involved in an auto accident on campus, report it to Campus Police immediately.

Campus Police will respond to accidents on College property and:

  • Investigate the accident and file a report.
  • Help drivers exchange information.
  • Provide first aid or call for medical assistance.
  • Request a tow truck if needed.
 
Accident reports are not provided to the public by Campus Police. You can purchase a report online.

Towing and Impounding

San Jacinto College works to provide enough parking spaces for students, employees and visitors. To help keep parking areas safe and accessible, please follow all parking rules.

Vehicles parked illegally may be towed or impounded at the owner's expense. Motorhomes, trailers and boats are not permitted on campus.

Parking

Do not park in fire zones, accessible parking spaces or staff parking areas unless you are authorized to do so.

During the first week of classes, Campus Police may issue warning notices for parking violations. After the first week, citations will be issued. Please park only in areas designated for student parking.

All students and employees must have a parking permit to park on campus.

If you have a disability, you may obtain a special parking permit from the Campus Business Office. You must provide one of the following:

  • A disabled license plate issued in your name. Bring your vehicle registration and ID.
  • A disabled parking placard issued to you. Bring the placard and your ID.
  • A letter from your doctor.

Types of Violations

Traffic citations issued by San Jac police officers are:

  • College citations, which are subject to a fine. (There is an appeal process if warranted.)
  • State citations, which require a court appearance at a designated Justice of the Peace courthouse.
All traffic violations should be paid within 10 business/working days of issuance. Failure to resolve a college citation by payment or appeal within 10 days will result in an additional $2 late fee.

The 3 Steps for Appealing a Ticket

We understand that traffic tickets are not always open-and-shut cases. If you feel the citation is unjust, you have a right to appeal. You may only appeal a ticket within 10 business/working days from the date the ticket was issued. Here are the following steps for appealing your ticket:

  1. Fill Out Appeal Form

    Complete an appeal form and submit it to Campus Police. Make sure your appeal is within 10 business/working days from the date of the ticket. Appeals will not be accepted after this time limit.

  2. Sit Tight

    The Dean of Student Development will rule on the matter within three business days/working days (Monday-Friday). The campus police office does not review ticket appeals or make appeal decisions.

  3. Reach Out

    To learn the verdict, please call the campus police office at 281-476-1820. Campus police will not call you to inform you of the outcome. Please allow 3-5 days from the date you turn in your appeal before calling.

Ticket Appeal Information and Form

The outcome of a parking ticket appeal may be dismissed, probated or denied.

  • Dismissed: The ticket is voided, and no payment is required.
  • Probated: The ticket is placed on hold unless you receive another ticket for the same offense. If you receive another ticket for the same offense, the original ticket becomes active again. For example, if a $15 staff parking ticket is probated and you later receive a $30 ticket for the same offense, the original $15 ticket will be reinstated. Your total balance would be $45.
  • Denied: The ticket remains valid, and the full amount is due.

Only school days are counted when calculating late fees. Late fees may continue to accrue while an appeal is being reviewed. You may pay a ticket before receiving an appeal decision. If the ticket is later dismissed or probated, the amount you paid will be credited to your College account.

Probationary tickets are cleared at the beginning of each fall semester. A ticket received on the first day of the fall semester is treated as a first violation, even if you received a ticket during the previous summer or spring semester.

An appeal may result in different outcomes for violations listed on the same ticket. For example, a no permit violation may be probated while a parked in staff violation is denied.

Campus Police do not accept parking ticket payments or handle payment transactions. You can pay your fine through the Make a Payment link in My San Jac or in person at the Business Office.
